What You Always Wanted to Know About Midwives
Who are midwives? The word “midwife” is derived from an Old English meaning “with woman.” There have always been midwives to assist women with birth. However, the midwife of modern times is a far cry from the old “granny” midwife. Since there are many different types of midwives who practice within the United States, it is important to know the distinctions among them before choosing a midwife. This information uses the term “midwife” to refer to Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) and Certified Midwives (CMs). Certified Nurse Midwives and Certified Midwives are licensed healthcare practitioners educated through accredited programs and universities throughout the United States and certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM). In addition to meeting stringent state regulations, ACNM-certified midwives must demonstrate their proficiency by passing comprehensive and standardized examinations, as well as hands-on training. They must also continue pursuing life-long education to retain their licenses.
