Sexual Pain and Pelvic Disorders

Desired vaginal penetration shouldn’t hurt, yet some women experience discomfort or even pain during sexual intercourse. A woman’s pelvic floor plays a major role in sexual functioning. If a woman experiences vulvar pain, she understandably may develop hesitation regarding sexual activity. Symptoms for some patients can even make them incapable of sexual activity.

Sexual Pain and Pelvic Disorders

  • Dyspareunia: Pain during sexual intercourse at penetration or deep pain during shearing.
  • Vaginismus: Involuntary tightening of vagina. Often during intercourse, gynecological exam or when inserting tampon. Often caused by muscle spasms.
  • Vulvodynia: Chronic pain/discomfort around opening of vagina (vulva).
  • Endometriosis: Disorder where tissue that normally lines uterus grows outside uterus & may require surgical intervention.
  • Genito-Urinary Symptoms of Menopause: Changes occurring with/after menopause (natural or induced) affecting vagina, vulva, urethra & bladder.

Symptoms

  • Pain with penetration, including inserting tampon or during gynecological exam.
  • Burning pain or aching pain at perineum (area between anus and vulva).
  • Throbbing pain, lasting hours after intercourse.
